Technology
Statesville Christian School started the 2011-2012 school year with an increased focus on technology for today’s learners. In addition to the High School Mac lab and Smart boards in all upper school classrooms, SCS supplied its elementary students with 22 iPads for 4th and 5th grade and six Kindles for 2nd and 3rd grade classes. Elementary teachers are hoping the gadgets will enhance instruction and help meet students at their different learning levels. The school purchased an additional Smart board for the elementary Science lab. Elementary Science Lab Coordinator Tonya Cone said she will use the new Smart board to take students to different virtual locations including biomes to explore concepts like predator and prey relationships. “I’m excited about being able to explore science topics in a more practical way for elementary students.” Fourth grade teacher Ann Veach said she will use the iPads and Kindles to teach students North Carolina history. “They will use the technology to create short films and conduct research,” she said. “Let’s face it – that’s where they are. Kids are so into high tech.” Fifth grade teacher Kris Boan said, “Technology is key in reaching today’s students. It’s where the kids’ thinking is and it’s a great way to learn beyond what pencil and paper can do.”
