Welcome to the last month of school! There are a lot of great events going on this month, and we encourage you to visit our website frequently and check your email for updates/clarifications throughout these busy final few weeks. Let’s take every opportunity to keep in step with Him and to encourage one another as our school year draws to a close!

Get In The Race! Our May Match!
Thank you for your generosity in giving to our Annual Fund. We are currently nearing the $175,000 mark and this month we have a May Match! Every dollar you give during May will be matched dollar for dollar up to $20,000!  The aim of our Annual Fund is to help support the tuition assistance we give to our families. Please consider giving generously- especially during May when your financial gift will be doubled.

National Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7-11
Parents and Students: If you have been thinking about writing a encouraging note a to teacher, bringing them chocolate, flowers, new khaki trousers or buying someone a new car, next week is the time to do that!  We are so grateful to God for our teachers and for the investment of their lives into our students. We often forget to tell people what they mean to us or to thank them for all they do. Let’s work together to do that next week!

Teacher of The Year
Each year we identify a Teacher of the Year for each school division (elementary, middle, high). We invite parents to discuss classroom experiences with their children and select one teacher within their child's school division to receive this award for the 2011-2012 school year. Deadline for voting: May 10th.  A Survey Monkey survey has been created for you to participate in the vote for Teacher of the Year; http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/teacheraward.

We hope your family enjoyed a refreshing Spring Break and are ready to hang in there for what feels like a mad dash to the end of school.   By the time you read this, there will be only six weeks of school remaining, so please bear with us if the content of the Messenger appears a bit “newsy.”   It is our desire to keep our parents well-informed and engaged as we enter the home stretch of the school year.

SPECIAL EDITION
The Messenger

January 26, 2012

This Special Edition is to inform you of school related current news and events scheduled for the first week of February.

Introducing the Statesville Christian School Learning Development Centers for 2012-2013
As we continue to seek ways to better serve our families, the SCS Board of Trustees has approved a plan to expand our educational services to students across a wider range of abilities and needs beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year.  Recognizing that within our own families, as well as the Christian community around us, there is a wide diversity of ability level and learning styles, SCS will implement differentiated instructional strategies to meet the needs of academically gifted students, students who are typical learners, and students with particular learning challenges.  More information will be available about the SCS Learning Development Centers later this spring.  Our commitment to academic excellence based upon a biblical worldview for all students continues to be our priority.

Special Guest Speaker, Craig McFarlane, to address Middle and High School Students
We are always looking for opportunities for our students to be exposed to motivational speakers who come from a variety of backgrounds.  We appreciate Dr. Brian Neuwirth sponsoring the opportunity for our Middle and High School students to hear an inspirational address from "The World's Greatest Blind Athlete," Mr. Craig McFarlane, on Wednesday, February 1st at 12:00 noon in the WABC Fellowship Hall.   This is not a chapel event, and we would welcome any and all parents who would like to attend.

In spite of suffering total loss of sight at age 2 through a tragic accident, Mr. McFarlane
viewed his blindness as, "just a minor inconvenience" rather than a handicap. Mr. McFarlane has been a world-class athlete that has won over 100 gold medals in a variety of sports (the majority against sighted competition) including wrestling, downhill skiing, and water skiing, as well as track & field.   To learn more about Craig McFarlane, please visit his website at www.CMPride.com.  Please plan to join us Wednesday morning, February 1st at 12:00 noon.

New Elementary Building Security – Effective Wednesday, February 1st
Many of you have probably noticed a speaker outside the main SCS elementary entrance.  Western Avenue has been in the process of installing a new security system.  This system will begin operation on Wednesday, 2/1/12.  The canopy doors will then be locked at all times.  In order to gain entrance, you must push the button on the speaker beside the double doors.  The school office or the WABC office (if they know you) will release the lock for you to enter.  PLEASE make sure there is no one else entering as you are buzzed into the building.  Many times intruders will come in on the coattail of someone else.

Families that participate in After Care will do the same thing until 4:30 each day.  After 4:30, please call one of the following numbers as you pull into the parking lot so someone can let you into the building.
     After Care Cell #:  (704) 682-3396
     Mr. Harris:  (704) 657-2439
     Sue Ann Burgess:  (704) 500-8717
After 4:30, all students will be in Mr. Harris’ room so the After Care supervisor and students can begin to watch for you to arrive.  Feel free to tap on Mr. Harris’ window should you have a problem reaching someone by cell phone.

We are grateful for this added security measure.  It will take a few weeks to get used to and work out all the glitches.  Please be patient with us as we continue to put safety as our number one priority.

“Paws for a Cause” and Winter Sports Senior Recognition – February 3rd
·         The February 3rd “Paws for a Cause” will honor our military by supporting the “Cell Phones for Soldiers” Program which helps troops call home by providing FREE communication tools to each branch of the United States Military.   Help support our “Paws for a Cause” by donating your gently-used cell phones.
·         SCS Seniors participating in winter sports teams will be recognized during a ceremony taking place between the Varsity Girls’ and Varsity Boys’ Basketball games  (approximate time 7:00PM).

HAPPY NEW YEAR!   We trust 2012 will be one in which your family as a whole and as individual members…. “may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”  Philippians 1:9-11

We want to express our gratitude to the many parents, grandparents, and friends of the school who consistently give generously of their time, prayers, and financial support to the school.  Our
Running the Race Annual Fund is currently at $142,000!   We DID meet the $15,000 December matching challenge, and we are grateful to those who are led by the Lord to commit their financial resources to His work at SCS.

With the many active SCS basketball teams, we are entering the busiest athletic period of the school year.   Check the “athletics” tab on the website for the athletic game schedule, and come out to show your school spirit and support for your SCS Lions!

Re-enrollment for 2012-2013 is just around the corner! We hope this year is going well for your family and that you are already planning for our continued partnership in the 2012-2013 academic year.  Re-Enrollment for current students runs from January 23 – February 10, 2012.  Families re-enrolling during this period will have half of the re-enrollment fee credited to the first 2012-2013 tuition payment.  The 2012-2013 Tuition Schedule is posted on the SCS website under the “admissions” tab, page two of "tuition."
