Interact Club

The SCS Interact Club is a service club sponsored by the Rotary Club of Statesville, Fourth Creek.  Rotary clubs all over the world sponsor these clubs for teens to encourage the development of leadership and service in the minds and habits of young people.  In order to remain active and in good standing with the sponsoring Rotary chapter, each Interact club must complete multiple community service projects and participate in a project that furthers international goodwill.  An annual fundraiser is necessary to fund some of the feeder projects promoted by the Rotary Club.  Students who maintain active roles in their local Interact Club are qualified to attend leadership development workshops and conferences hosted by Rotary International.  The Rotary also considers representatives from each of their Interact Clubs in the annual awarding of scholarships to graduating high school seniors. Though the Interact Club exists as an outreach of the Rotary Club, the student members at SCS are encouraged to approach the service projects as opportunities to model the humility and compassion of Christ.

Potential service projects for the SCS Interact members include honoring the “Adopt A Highway” responsibility that the Interact Club accepted in 2005, encouraging members of the Boys & Girls Club of America in their annual fitness fun run, volunteering to work on a Habitat for Humanity site for a day, cleaning and enhancing the property of the SCS campus, tutoring younger students who struggle academically, and raising funds to contribute to SEED, a Rotary project that sends tons of vegetable seeds to needy developing countries.  Rotary Club advisers periodically channel service opportunities to the Interact chapters.  Options endorsed by Rotary include assisting in charity golf-tournament details, collecting for UNICEF, and ringing the Salvation Army bells.

Rotary International also sponsors an annual video contest in which each Interact Club is encouraged to create a video illustrating the local club’s involvement in service.  Prizes are awarded to the best videos, and the deadline is usually mid-December.  The SCS chapter hopes to enter that contest next fall.

National Junior Honor Society

The NJHS was established in 1929 by the National Association of Secondary Principals.  The purpose of NJHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship,  to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage good citizenship of students.  NJHS at SCS  includes students in grades 7 – 9.    Officers of NJHS must be ninth grade members in good standing.   Students in grades 6 – 8 may  apply for NJHS selection in May.  Currently, NJHS is operating a school supply store during QRT.  Profits from the operation of this store will support a service project.

The Culinary Club

The SCS Culinary Club is an extracurricular club open to all high school students.  Budding chefs learn the basics of food preparation and food safety, in addition to the economics of planning and purchasing food items.  The Culinary Club occasionally serves at school events and sends home-cooked dishes to families in need.
